The Last Words of Christ - A Message for YOU

“HE THAT HATH AN EAR LET HIM HEAR”

"ears to hear with"A Study of Revelation 22 the last words of Christ

Revelation Chapter 22 brings the “Revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ” to an end.  Read this chapter along with these study notes.

One cannot emphasis enough the SIGNIFICANCE of the fact that these are the last words of Christ to all his followers.

They are his final message to his followers who look to his coming with great joy and to the fulfilment of the promise that “we shall be like him”!.

Revelation 21

The last two chapters introduce the Glorious Consummation of the purpose of Almighty God.

Revelation Chapter 21:1-1-8  Presents as it were the FINAL SCENE of God’s Purpose.

The verses following these to Vs6 of Ch22 deal with the Millennial Reign of Christ and the Saints as the necessary step to the “ALL IN ALL” or “NEW JERUSALEM” that 21:1-8 presents.

The first is a Literal Temple (dwelling) whereas the second is a Spiritual Temple (dwelling).

Ezekiel's Temple of the Kingdom Age

Revelation 22: 1-6

THE RIVER OF LIFE

In these verses John describes the “pure river of water of life clear as crystal proceeding out of the throne of God and the Lamb” from the Holy City  JERUSALEM.

Vs1… read

“river of water of life…”

This is the “stream of living water” flowing from the Altar of Ezekiel’s Temple to be built when Christ returns.

Ezekiel 47:1-2

“1Afterward he brought me again unto the door of the house; and, behold, waters issued out from under the threshold of the house eastward: for the forefront of the house stood toward the east, and the waters came down from under from the right side of the house, at the south side of the altar. 2 Then brought he me out of the way of the gate northward, and led me about the way without unto the utter gate by the way that looketh eastward; and, behold, there ran out waters on the right side. 3 And when the man that had the line in his hand went forth eastward, he measured a thousand cubits, and he brought me through the waters; the waters were to the ankles. 4 Again he measured a thousand, and brought me through the waters; the waters were to the knees. Again he measured a thousand, and brought me through; the waters were to the loins. 5 Afterward he measured a thousand; and it was a river that I could not pass over: for the waters were risen, waters to swim in, a river that could not be passed over. 6 And he said unto me, Son of man, hast thou seen this? Then he brought me, and caused me to return to the brink of the river. 7 Now when I had returned, behold, at the bank of the river were very many trees on the one side and on the other. 8 Then said he unto me, These waters issue out toward the east country, and go down into the desert, and go into the sea: which being brought forth into the sea, the waters shall be healed.”

Christ is the Altar, and from him will come the doctrine of life as a “stream of living water”.

This will bring to life the barrenness of men’s minds, and it will heal the “dead sea of the nations”.

“proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb…”

Vs2… read

“In the midst of the street of it…”

Greek ‘plateia’ sig. “broad-space”   and relates to the four square area of the Holy City.

“And on either side of the river, was there the tree of life…”

Greek ‘xulon’ can relate to a wood or a forest of trees.

“…twelve manner of fruit…”    “twelve” identifies the fruit with the Hope of Israel (ie. The 12 Tribes of Israel)

“And the leaves of the trees were for the healing of the nations…”

Ezekiel 47:12

“12And by the river upon the bank thereof, on this side and on that side, shall grow all trees for meat, whose leaf shall not fade, neither shall the fruit thereof be consumed: it shall bring forth new fruit according to his months, because their waters they issued out of the sanctuary: and the fruit thereof shall be for meat, and the leaf thereof for medicine.”

vs3… read

“And there shall be no more curse…”  ie. The Curse of Eden, death shall be no more.

Man’s sinful inclinations will be gone!

Vs4… read

“And they shall see his face…”  The face of Christ and  “we shall be like him”!

1John 3:2

“2Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.”

vs5… read

“…no more night…”

“…they need no candle”RV “light of lamp”

Gr. luchnos   sig. portable lamp fed by oil.  These will not be required as the Glory (light) of God shall light this area at all times.

Ezekiel 43:1-6

“1Afterward he brought me to the gate, even the gate that looketh toward the east: 2 And, behold, the glory of the God of Israel came from the way of the east: and his voice was like a noise of many waters: and the earth shined with his glory. 3 And it was according to the appearance of the vision which I saw, even according to the vision that I saw when I came to destroy the city: and the visions were like the vision that I saw by the river Chebar; and I fell upon my face. 4 And the glory of the LORD came into the house by the way of the gate whose prospect is toward the east. 5 So the spirit took me up, and brought me into the inner court; and, behold, the glory of the LORD filled the house. 6 And I heard him speaking unto me out of the house; and the man stood by me.”

Vs7 - 21        CHRIST’S FINAL ADMONITION AND APPEAL

The visions have now come to an end.

Christ proceeds now to give warning, encouragement and a rebuke to those who would seek to meddle with his words.

Vs7… read

“Behold, I come quickly…”

It’s significant that this occurs 7 times in Revelation (2:5, 16; 3:11; 11:14; 22:7, 12, 20)

7 is the number of divine perfection and so this is what all true followers of Christ most strive for now in the days of our flesh in the full measure that we are able.

“quickly”        Gr. Sig. Swiftly, speedily or unexpectedly.  Strong says it signifies ‘shortly’.

As 1900 years have now passed Christ obviously used the term in reference to the context of the unfolding visions seen by John.

The warning therefore is most appropriate to us!

“Blessed is he that keepeth the sayings of the prophecy of this book…”

“Blessed”      signifies happy.

“keepeth”      signifies to watch over, preserve, to guard.  Imp. We keep our mind focused or attuned to the words of this back and take comfort and happiness from them despite our personal circumstances knowing that all things are being worked out according to Christ’s words.

Vs8… read

This is the end for all those who would resist God and walk after the ways of mankind.

vs9… read

This was the angel that spoke to John, “…thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren the prophets…”

Revelation 19:10

“10And I fell at his feet to worship him. And he said unto me, See thou do it not: I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren that have the testimony of Jesus: worship God: for the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.”

Our wonder and adoration of the greatness of Yahweh’s purpose should be directed to God alone.

vs10… read

“…Seal not up the words of the prophecy of this book…”        ie. Don’t shut them up, these things are about to unfold.

These things were afar off, and typically some may have tended to ignore these words.

Vs11… read

“unjust”         These are those unjustified through faith demonstrated in baptism, through which they enter into covenant relationship with Christ.

“filthy”           Greek signifies ‘vile clothing’   These are those who whilst entering into covenant relationship with Christ have failed to keep their garments clean.  (Rev 3:4)

“righteous”    Those who are justified by faith.

“holy”            Those who have maintained their separateness from the world.  (vs14-15)

Let us “work out our own Salvation with fear and trembling”

Vs12… read

“…behold I come quickly…”

“…my reward is with me…”          Greek signifies ‘wages’  The redeemed will receive payment for their faithful service far beyond the value of the work.

“…according as his work shall be…”

Vs13… read

“…Alpha and Omega”        “The Beginning and the End”

“The First and the Last” (see Revelation 1:8, 11)

Vs14… read

“Blessed are they that do his commandments…”

RV. & Diaglott have “wash their robes”

See Revelation 7:1-4,  &  14

“That they may have right to the tree of life…”   Greek signifies authority

John 1:12

“But as many as received him, to them gave he power (RV. the right) to become the sons of God, even to them that  believe on his name.”

At last the ELECT of God receive that which was denied to ADAM and EVE.

These will inherit the NEW JERUSALEM.

Isaiah 26:2

“Open ye the gates, that the righteous nation which keepeth the truth may

enter in.”

See Revelation 21:7-8        Outside are all others.

Vs15… read

Vs16… read

“I Jesus have sent…”

Our Lord speaks directly to us to confirm the things his angel had spoken.  Jesus had taken great effort to ensure the Apocalypse was revealed to his brethren.

We can imagine his desire for us to know these things.

Cp.  Moses words to Israel  “I have called heaven and earth to witness against you this day, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that  thou and thy seed my live.”

How much more so does Jesus desire that we should read and know the things contained in this final message to his followers, to those who desire to be like him, to those who desire to be resurrected and clothed in immortality like him, for such is the promise.

“I am the root and offspring of David…”

Isaiah 11:1, 10

“1And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots:”

10And in that day there shall be a root of Jesse, which shall stand for an ensign of the people; to it shall the Gentiles seek: and his rest shall be glorious.”

Compare: The Parable of the “Grain of Mustard Seed”

From small beginnings and great humiliation will arise the greatest King this earth has and will ever know.

“…the bright and morning star.”

The star that heralds the beginning of a NEW DAY!   A NEW AGE commences upon the earth.

Revelation 2:28       “And I will give him the morning star.”

At this time we will be ONE with Jesus and the Father.

Vs17… read

“spirit”  ie. The state of mind produced by the Word.   The mind of the true Bride.

Compare: Revelation 21:6  “…I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely.”

Vs18-19… read

There is a clear warning here that we all must give the appropriate place of importance to these last words of our Lord.

Sadly these words suggest that some might be rejected at the Judgement Seat because they have failed to heed this warning and have ignored or worse changed the teaching of THE APOCALYPSE of our Lord Jesus Christ.

The importance of this book can not be emphasised enough!!!

Vs20… read

“…Surely I come quickly…”

“Even so”   should be “Amen”  as RV.

The words of Paul come to mind:

2 Timothy 4:8

“…henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day; and not to me only but unto all them also that love his appearing.”

Vs21… read

Surely in view of this age in which we live we have no hesitation in adding our AMEN - SO BE IT!  to these words of John.

What a wonderful privilege was given to him, and yet it is a privilege we can still share in today.
