True Bible Teaching

An independent study of the Bible will reveal that the following are key True Bible Teachings:

  1. The Bible is God's word and the only message from him. It is without error, except for copying and translation errors.
  2. There is only one God - the Father. The Holy Spirit is God's power.
  3. Jesus is the Son of God, and a human being, through his mother Mary.
  4. Man is mortal, having no existence when dead.
  5. By living a sinless life, ending with his sacrificial death by crucifixion, Jesus has opened the way of salvation from death.
  6. Belief and baptism are essential steps to salvation.
  7. God raised Jesus from death. Jesus is currently in Heaven, on God's right hand. He will one day return.
  8. When Jesus returns, he will raise his "sleeping" followers from death and grant immortality to the faithful who have tried to live by God's precepts.
  9. His followers will help him to rule, bringing justice, righteousness and peace to the whole world - the Kingdom of God.

WHY IS BIBLE TRUTH SO IMPORTANT?

Bible Truth

THE IMPORTANCE OF BIBLE TRUTH

Is Bible Truth important to your Faith and Salvation ie. will you be saved despite what you believe the bible teaches or does it matter what you believe?

Well the word “truth” appears 237 times in the bible, that alone says it must be important!

Therefore it must be important to understand what “truth” is.

A quick scan of the passages using this word “truth” leave us in no doubt that it is not only important, but vital to our salvation.

John 17:3

3 And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.

1 John 5:20

20And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life.

1 Timothy 2:3-4

3For thisis good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour; 4 Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.

Clearly then knowing what is Bible Truth is important and vital, in addition to this we are also warned that some would depart from the “truth”…

1 Timothy 4:1

1Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; 2 Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron; 3 Forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth.

1 John 4:6

6We are of God: he that knoweth God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us. Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error.

From these passages it is very clear that we need to know the “truth” about God and His Son as it is taught to us in the Bible.  This means we must learn what this is from the Bible itself.

Don't let your HOPE of LIFE ETERNAL rest with someone else eg. your pastor or minister, YOU owe it to yourself and your family to be fully convinced of what it is you believe to be sure it HOLDS something REAL for you.

We have all been warned by God that there would be many false teachers and Jesus himself has told us that "Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it."  See Matthew 7:14

Sadly when Christ returns to this earth, many will only then realise that they have believed in lies Jeremiah 16:19

"19 O LORD, my strength, and my fortress, and my refuge in the day of affliction, the Gentiles shall come unto thee from the ends of the earth, and shall say, Surely our fathers have inherited lies, vanity, and things wherein there is no profit."

Don't let this be you or your family!

The Bible is our only true source for the Truth!

If we claim to follow Christ we should trust in the Scriptures as confidently as Jesus and his Apostles did:

Jesus said that: The Scripture cannot be broken.  (John 10:35)

Paul said that: All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness. (2 Timothy 3:16)

Peter said that: For prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit (2 Peter 1:21)

The things which now have been reported to you through those who have preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven (1 Peter 1:12)

The OFFER of LIFE or DEATH

God's Offer of LIFE or DEATH

“Now what I am commanding you today is not too difficult for you or beyond your reach. It is not up in heaven, so that you have to ask, “Who will ascend into heaven to get it and proclaim it to us so we may obey it?” Nor is it beyond the sea, so that you have to ask, “Who will cross the sea to get it and proclaim it to us so we may obey it?” No, the word is very near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart so you may obey it.   See, I set before you today life and prosperity, death and destruction. For I command you today to love the Lord your God, to walk in obedience to him… This day I call the heavens and the earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live and that you may love the Lord your God, listen to his voice, and hold fast to him. For the Lord is your life…"  Deuteronomy Chapter 30:12-20

From this passage we see how important it is to each one of us that we seek after God and His Word the Bible to us.

Without this we have no hope of LIFE, but only a future of DEATH.

This Word of God was originally given to the Nation of Israel and later it spread via the Apostles of Christ to the World, that even we today might have this same HOPE of LIFE ETERNAL.

It is UP to YOU then to seek out God’s Word, to KNOW what is the TRUTH of God’s Word so that you and your family might KNOW the way of LIFE ETERNAL and the great HOPE of living in God’s Kingdom on EARTH.

Do not let your HOPE rest upon others and most importantly on what others teach, search it out for yourself because we have been warned that the churches would be astray from God’s word in the last days.

"For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.”   2 Timothy 4:3-4

Too much is at stake for you to not act yourself to seek out the TRUTH.

Christ himself has told us to do this when he said…

But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him. Godis a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.” John 4:23-24

The Bible Is Our ONLY Guide

The Holy BibleThe Bible provides us with plain Scriptural Teaching for the True Followers of Christ

The statements on this guide represent what we believe is true Bible teaching. The statements are deliberately challenging, asking every reader to compare his own opinions with the plain teaching of Scripture, examining carefully the Bible passages offered as proof. If, as a result, a change of mind and heart is called for, there will be no doubt that the teaching of the Lord, and the book he trusted, must be followed and not what the churches teach.

All Scripture quotations are taken from the New King James (also known as the Revised Authorized) Version of the Bible.

True Bible Teaching - Gods Word Explained

Why should I Believe in a God I can’t See?Why can't we see God?

❖ Because there is a lot of evidence around us that there is a power greater than ourselves;

❖ Because there are many facts that can only be explained by the existence of such a power.

We can understand that it’s hard to believe in a God we can’t see, so let’s explore the reasons for believing in a power greater than ourselves.

A God we Can’t See.

❖ Observable facts in science

scientists find out waht our world is made up ofWherever they look, scientists find that our world is made up of distinct animals and species. There are no observable facts to support major development of species.

This implies that a superhuman intelligence produced the different animals and species.

❖ Where did life come from?

The cell is the basis of all life. It has many life support systems. These systems are dependent on each other and cannot exist without each other.

One example is that cell walls are only made by enzymes. And yet the enzymes cannot do their job the structure of a cellunless they are kept in place by the cell wall.

It is difficult to see how the first cell appeared unless it was complete and fully functional.

This implies it was created.

❖ The laws of physics

The laws of physics are very precise.

For example, the volume, pressure and temperature of the air Pressures in a car tyre are interrelatedin a car tyre are all interrelated in a very accurate way. When the temperature goes down by a certain amount, the pressure in a particular tyre will always go down by the same exact amount. The existence of these exact laws implies a “law giver”.

❖ The universe “seemed to know we were coming”

Well known writer Professor Paul Davies wrote in his book “The Goldilocks Enigma”:

If almost any of the basic features of the universe, from the properties of atoms to the distribution of the galaxies, were different, life would very probably be impossible ... a biofriendly universe looks like a fix – or ‘a put-up job’, to use the pithy description of the late British cosmologist Fred Hoyle. It appeared to Hoyle as if a super-intellect had been ‘monkeying’ with the laws of physics. He was right in his impression.

Jesus is Coming Again!

Jesus is alive; indeed, he is alive for evermore, and is now in heaven. God has given “all authority … in heaven and Jesus is Coming Soon!on earth” to him (Matthew 28:18). He is directing the angels as they guide the nations towards the great events that will at last bring the Kingdom of God to the earth and fill it with God’s glory.

Luke’s Gospel describes how Jesus was taken into heaven. Jesus led his disciples to the far side of the Mount of Olives, just out of sight of Jerusalem, “and he lifted up his hands and blessed them. Now it came to pass, while he blessed them, that he was parted from them and carried up into heaven” (Luke 24:50–52).

Christians call this the Ascension. But something else of importance happened then.

The Promise

In Luke’s second book, the Acts of the Apostles, he tells us what happened next:

And while they looked steadfastly toward heaven as he went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel, who also said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand gazing up into heaven? This same Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will so come in like manner as you saw him go into heaven” (Acts 1:10–12).

It follows that whilst Jesus has been in heaven ever since his ascension, he will return. He said so to his followers before his death when cataloguing the things that were to happen before his coming, saying:

“Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory” (Matthew 24:30).

Jesus said so again to the Jewish High Priest, at his trial:

“I say to you, hereafter you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Power, and coming on the clouds of heaven” (Matthew 26:64).

‘‘Have You Considered My Servant Job’’

The book of Job is deemed to be one of the oldest documents in existence and Job himself may have been "Have you considered my servant Job?"contemporary with Abraham. Though Job was undoubtedly a real, historical figure, the writer presents a major episode in his life in the form of a play.

Two Challenges

➊ At that time it was assumed that good citizens are blessed by God with excellent health, high esteem and wealth. The book of Job challenges that assumption.

The same wrong assumption can be found in the New Testament. When confronted with a man who was born blind the disciples of Jesus had a problem:

“Rabbi,” they asked Jesus, “who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” (John 9:2).

They assumed that it must be somebody’s fault! Even today the same views are lurking around. “I don’t know what I’ve done to deserve this!” can be the reaction to adverse circumstances.

➋ The book of Job also examines the question of forgiveness in a way which anticipates the teaching of Jesus.

Three supposed friends of Job appear on the scene. In spite of all the cruel words they heaped onto the head of Job, he was able to find it in his heart to show a forgiving spirit. Job remembered his friends in his prayers to God. In this way his prayers became medicine for his own soul; bitterness, anger and revenge were excluded by the greater power of forgiveness.

The Drama Unfolds

Act 1: (Job chapter 1 and 2:1–10)

Job and his 3 miserable comforters Eliphaz, Bildad and Zophar. We are introduced to Job as a “blameless and upright” man. He was extremely wealthy and had brought up his children to be God-fearing citizens; he enjoyed great status in his community.

On one occasion, Job was holding a religious gathering but a character named ‘Satan’ also attended. (The writer introduces this character to give voice to the unspoken words of some of Job’s friends who were jealous of him and were thinking that if God had blessed them with great wealth, they could afford to be God-fearing people too.) The Almighty was also present at the gathering.

God gave ‘Satan’ the power to severely test Job and so a series of disasters befell him destroying much of his wealth and leaving him in a pitiful state due to painful sores which caused relentless itching. Would he still be “godly and upright”? Even his wife appeared to turn against him, “Curse God and die” was her advice.

But Job’s trust in God was unshakeable – although even he was totally bewildered. “Why, why, why is God dealing with me like this?” he asked, and he had no answer so he wished that he could die.

Act 2: (Job 2:11–32:1)

Three friends arrive to express their sympathy with Job but it soon becomes clear that privately they derive some satisfaction from the downfall of this great man. To them the explanation is clear – in spite of all appearances to the contrary, Job must have been a wicked man because everyone knows that God brings misfortunes on the wicked. In a long series of speeches they mercilessly rub their increasingly cruel words into Job, thus exacerbating his anguish. These are some of the things they say:

Is the TRINITY Biblical teaching?Trinity Symbol

The doctrine of the Trinity is widely accepted in orthodox Christianity and many accept it as truth without question.

But people who believe that the Bible contains the truth that God has revealed about Himself and His purpose will want to satisfy themselves that the Bible really teaches that God, the Lord Jesus and the Holy Spirit are indeed three-in-one, as the creeds declare. This matters because the Lord Jesus, in a prayer to his Father, said:

This is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent (John17:3).

The Origins

The word “Trinity” is not found in the Bible, neither in the Old nor the New Testaments. It is a word that came into existence many years after the New Testament was completed and circulated.

It first appeared in the writings of church fathers and was developed into a system of belief by church councils about 400 years later. Three creeds were formulated – the Apostles’ Creed, the Nicene Creed and the Athanasian Creed – and those creeds are still in use in some churches today. But are they a true expression of what the Bible teaches? We’ll look at just two.

The Apostles’ Creed

This creed is the oldest of the three and is the nearest to the original faith of the early Christians.

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead.

On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.1

You can see that the wording is simple and its statements largely summarize Bible teaching. But subsequent church councils developed a much more complicated way of describing the relationship between the Lord Jesus and his Father, as they saw it, resulting in another set of statements.

The Athanasian Creed

Although called after Athanasius, who was a bishop in Alexandria, this wording came long after his death. It was the product of a church council which wanted to end controversy and the difference of opinion which had existed throughout the established church for centuries. That is why the wording is so emphatic that this is the only belief that will lead to salvation.

Here are a few selections from the creed:

“Whosoever will be saved, before all things it is necessary that he hold the catholic faith. Which faith except every one do keep whole and undefiled; without doubt he shall perish everlastingly. And the catholic faith is this: That we worship one God in Trinity, and Trinity in Unity; neither confounding the Persons; nor dividing the Essence. For there is one Person of the Father; another of the Son; and another of the Holy Ghost. But the Godhead of the Father, of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost, is all one…

Then a bit further, we have:

As also there are not three uncreated; nor three infinites, but one uncreated; and one infinite. So likewise the Father is Almighty; the Son Almighty; and the Holy Ghost Almighty. And yet they are not three Almighties; but one Almighty.

So the Father is God; the Son is God; and the Holy Ghost is God. And yet they are not three Gods; but one God.

So likewise the Father is Lord; the Son Lord; and the Holy Ghost Lord. And yet not three Lords; but one Lord.

The Son of God

The Son of God died a cruel and painful death on the cross - Why was this?

God revealed or manifested Himself through angels who spoke for Him and revealed to us that He wants a family of believers who will be like Him (ie. will show in their life God’s character of goodness, truth, mercy and love) and through whom the world will ultimately be filled with His glory (God’ Character).  In this article we will explain how God has made that possible by causing His Son, the Lord Jesus, to be born to the virgin Mary, to live and die as he did that we all might have this GREAT HOPE of a better life to come.

Son of God?

In the promises made to Abraham concerning the land, it was dramatically shown to him that the seed through whom the promise would be fulfilled would be the Son of God.

Isaac was a child of promise. It is foolish for the Jew to scoff at the idea of God having a Son, when the Jewish race owes its existence to the operation of Divine power, apart from which there would have been no Isaac and no Jacob and thus no twelve tribes of Israel.

The dramatic parable was continued when Isaac was offered by Abraham at God’s command. His hand was stayed before Isaac was slain; and the Apostle Paul, writing to the Hebrews, says this:

"By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac, and he who had received the promises offered up his only begotten son, of whom it was said, “In Isaac your seed shall be called,” concluding that God was able to raise him up, even from the dead, from which he also received him in a figurative sense" (Hebrews 11:17–19).

Christ was the Lamb of God's providingWhen Isaac asked Abraham where was the lamb for the sacrifice, he said:

“My son, God will provide for Himself the lamb for a burnt offering” (Genesis 22:8).

When Jesus was announced to Israel, John said, “Behold the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world” (John 1:29).

Wanted: A King!

When Israel was established as a nation and asked for a king of their own, God further unfolded His purpose. In the covenant of the throne we find the words concerning the seed or offspring of David, who should sit upon David’s throne forever. God said of this coming King: “I will be his Father, and he shall be My son (2 Samuel 7:14). Under the guidance of the spirit of God, David says:

"The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at My right hand, till I make your enemies your footstool.” The Lord shall send the rod of your strength out of Zion. Rule in the midst of your enemies!" (Psalm 110:1,2).

These words indicate that this descendant of David should for a time be with the Father in heaven, thence to return to earth to rule in the midst of his enemies, and occupy his throne in Zion, where David’s throne was established in the past.

Divine Status

The language used by David is very significant − “The Lord said unto my lord.” Jesus quotes this in his argument with the Pharisees, when they had been tempting him.

The Pre-Existence of Christ

"God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power; how he went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him."(Acts 10:38 NRSV)

DID CHRIST EXIST BEFORE HE WAS BORN?

In the natural order of things, this would be a silly question. How could anyone exist before they were born? Unfortunately, when it comes to religious superstition, there are many who teach falsely that Jesus was first God, and then he became a man. This doctrine is referred to as "the pre-existence of Christ." This is a false teaching that we need to review and clarify because so many have been deceived by it.

The verse in the box at the top presents us with important Bible information that has a bearing on this subject. This anointing of Jesus took place right after he was baptized. We read the story of the baptism of Jesus in Matthew 3:16-17.

"And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened"the Spirit of God descending like a dove..." unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him: And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased."

JESUS ANOINTED BY GOD

There are many interesting revelations in Acts 10:38 (above) that are worth our consideration:

If Jesus were God, how could he anoint himself, and continue to be "with him"?

If the Holy Spirit was a person (as some erroneously teach), how could one person anoint another with a third person?

The name Christ means "anointed"; Jesus of Nazareth did not become Jesus the Christ (the anointed), -until after the anointing occurred. How then could Christ pre-exist?

Other relative questions:

How could a son be alive before his mother and still be her offspring?

How could Jesus be the descendent of Abraham and David if he was born before they were?

"And again, when he bringeth in the first begotten into the world, he saith, And let all the angels of God worship him."(Hebrews 1:6)

Man is MORTAL

A notice board outside a church had on it a simple statement of beliefs and included among them were the All men are MORTALwords;

“Man is Mortal”.

I thought it unusual because it seemed so obvious. ‘Mortal’ means ‘liable to die’ and it is clear that we are all in that unhappy state whether we know it or not. Even crossing the road can be fatal if you don’t look where you are going.

The opposite is immortal – that is, incapable of dying. I’ve never met anyone in that happy condition and I doubt that you have either.

Not so Simple

After a bit of thought I realised the point that was being made on the notice board. You have only to take a stroll through a graveyard to realise that there are many different ideas about death. And if you extend your consideration to think about other religions the scope widens immensely.

It becomes evident that lots of people believe, and even more people hope, that after death life continues in some other form. I was once at the funeral of a keen cricketer who had no religious beliefs whatsoever, but that didn’t stop a friend of his expressing the belief that the deceased was now playing cricket again, this time with a much better team than his earthly colleagues ever achieved.

Those are nice thoughts to express, but are they just make believe?

And how can we know what really happens without dying ourselves to find out?

This leads us to the obvious question “What really happens to me when I die?”

Let us turn to the Bible for God’s answer to this question.

Mortal or Immortal?

It really is very easy to find out about our true nature. Just searching in a Bible Concordance for the words “mortal” and “immortal” will produce the following:

‘Can a mortal be more righteous than God? Can a man be more pure than his Maker?’ (Job 4:17);

"I will make a mortal more rare than fine gold, a man more than the golden wedge of Ophir" (Isaiah 13:12);

"Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body, that you should obey it in its lusts" (Romans 6:12);

"Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, to God who alone is wise, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen" (1 Timothy 1:17).

Extend your search a little and you will find some clear warnings that human existence can simply cease or perish:

"Nevertheless man, though in honour, does not remain; he is like the beasts that perish. This is the way of those who are foolish, and of their posterity who approve their sayings" (Psalm 49:12–13);

"To give you who are troubled rest with us when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with his mighty angels, in flaming fire taking vengeance on those who do not know God, and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. These shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his power" (2 Thessalonians 1:7–9).

Jesus Born of the Virgin Mary

After thousands of years of sin and failure, along came just one man who got everything right and that man wasMary the Mother of Jesus the Lord Jesus. Jesus was able to overcome, where all others have failed, because whilst Mary was his mother, God was his Father. For Jesus was virgin born.

Unique

Although he was the Son of God, the Jewish leaders hated him and throughout his short life they tried to find fault with what he said and the way he lived.

They wanted to discredit him, destroy his influence with the people, and finally they determined to have him killed. There was something about the way that Jesus spoke that really annoyed them. Frequently, people who heard him were amazed at his teaching.

It was plain and direct, very different from the complicated opinions they were used to:

“So it was, when Jesus had ended these sayings, that the people were astonished at his teaching, for he

taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes” (Matthew 7:28–29).

When the Pharisees and Sadducees asked him trick questions, the result was the same:

“When the multitudes heard this, they were astonished at his teaching” (Matthew 22:33).

Promised: A Unique Birth

The Old Testament had pointed out very plainly – and it still does – that human nature is so weak that we men and women cannot save ourselves.

Jesus Christ the Son of God and Son of Man

The origin of the Son

How Jesus came to exist is explained in simple terms in the Gospel of Luke. To Mary, a God-fearing virgin in Israel, herself a descendant of David the King, there appeared an angel with a very remarkable message:"Thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name Jesus..."

“Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee … Thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name Jesus (Saviour). He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David … and of his kingdom there shall be no end.” (Luke 1:28-33)

Let us pause for a moment to appreciate the shock of surprise and then exhilaration that these words would provoke in her. She knew quite well the promise made to David over 900 years before. A descendant (son) of David would be the means of restoring the glory of the kingdom of Israel, and of reconciling Israel to God. This was the long expected Messiah, and she was actually to be his mother. Her child was to reign on David’s throne!

But then – perplexity. Although Mary was betrothed to a God-fearing Israelite named Joseph, they were not yet married, and there could be no question of a child being born until they were. How then, Mary asks the angel, can this promise come to pass? The angel is quite explicit in his reply:

“The Holy Spirit shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.” (verse 35)

To complete the picture, Matthew’s Gospel gives us the matter as it appeared to Joseph, her future husband. Before they were married, Mary “was found with child of the Holy Spirit”. Joseph would have been fully justified in repudiating his undertaking to marry her. But an angel had a message for him from God:

“Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. And she shall bring forth a son; and thou shalt call his name Jesus; for it is he that shall save his people from their sins.” (Matthew 1:20,21, RV)

From this Joseph would understand that this child was to be the Messiah. The whole episode is concluded by Matthew’s statement:

“All this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying (he quotes Isaiah’s prophecy uttered 700 years before): Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.” (verses 22,23)

These divine statements to Mary and Joseph contained the most momentous news. A child with a great destiny was to be born, for he would not only reign on David’s throne for ever, but he would also “save his people from their sins”. But the child’s origin is clearly stressed. Mary is to be the mother, but Joseph is not to be the father. The child will be conceived because “the power of the Highest”, “the Holy Spirit”, will operate upon Mary to bring the marvel to pass. And so “a virgin shall conceive” and her son shall be called “the Son of God”. This is the clear Bible teaching of the Virgin Birth of Christ.

Jesus, Son of Man

There is reluctance sometimes to accept the fact that Jesus, the Son of God, was fully a member of the human race. Some feel that to think of him as sharing our nature with all its weakness is to degrade him, and to throw doubt on his sinlessness.

Here again we must turn to the evidence of the Bible. We have seen already the clear record of his origin and his birth: Son of God, but also son of Mary. The Apostle Paul, writing to the Galatians, puts it thus:

“When the fulness of the time came, God sent forth his Son, born of a woman, born under the law.” (4:4, RV)

“Born under the Law” means that he was a male Israelite, living under the Law of Moses. Paul tells us why: “that he might redeem them which were under the law” (verse 5). The Jews lived under a law that condemned them because they could not keep it without sinning. Jesus was born one of them, so that he could fully represent them in his work of redemption.

The Epistle to the Hebrews describes how Jesus had to be made “perfect through sufferings”, so that he might be “the author of salvation” for those who are to be sons (and daughters) of God. For this reason “he that sanctifieth (Jesus) and they that are sanctified (the faithful) are all of one”; that is, are of the same nature. This is what he next declares, referring to the sons and daughters this time as “the children”:

“Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same …” (Hebrews 2:10-14)

The Book of Revelation Explained – Part 3

The Book of Revelations Explained

The Book of Revelation is a series of visions, seen and recorded by John, one of Jesus’ apostles. We saw in the last two issues how the book uses imagery to depict the history of the Roman Empire from its early phases through to its eventual fall. In this concluding article we find that history is now being viewed from a different perspective: a spiritual one.

In the last ten chapters of the book, the reader sees everything working together towards the great climax of God’s purpose – the establishment of God’s Kingdom on earth.

The Seed of the Woman

In Revelation chapter 12, we catch up with events inside the church, and the picture is not encouraging. John sees a vision of a pregnant woman in heaven who gives birth to a son. There is a conflict with a large red dragon, which is thrown out of heaven. This unusual imagery is based on the first prophecy in the Bible – the promise to Adam and

Eve that a descendant of the woman would destroy the serpent which The Serpent in the Garden of Edendeceived them and led them to commit the first sin (Genesis 3:15).

That promise was fulfilled in the Lord Jesus, son of the virgin Mary, and therefore the seed of the woman, who defeated the power of sin in his death and resurrection. But that was long before and the Revelation now uses this Old Testament language to describe the fourth century battle between Constantine and the pagan emperor (Licinius) who ruled over the eastern third of the Empire. Paganism was overthrown and Christians could briefly rejoice that they could worship in peace, a short-term foretaste of the peace of God’s coming Kingdom.

Compromise and Corruption

But shadows lay ahead. The woman represents the church. She is no longer a virgin, pure and separate from the world, awaiting the return of the Lord as her husband–to–be (see 2 Corinthians 11:2). She is pregnant, unfaithful to him, and now in a position of power as a partner of emperors and princes. That is why in the vision she is depicted in heaven, and crowned with the sun and stars.

The effect of power was compromise and corruption; the true gospel of the First Century church was corrupted.

New teachings crept in from Greek philosophy, such as humans having immortal souls, and the myth that Jesus is God. A hierarchy of priests, bishops and archbishops replaced the simplicity of the early church. Christians once refused to fight in the Roman army, but now joined its ranks.

The Saints (True Believers) were put in prisonPersecution of True Believers

There were some who protested against this corruption. A tiny minority, they championed the true gospel as preached by the apostles, and they suffered in consequence. There is no intolerance like religious intolerance. As the centuries passed, they faced exclusion, imprisonment and death. The ousted pagan dragon is replaced in the next chapter by another composite beast, with seven heads, which has great power and we read:

And it was given unto him to make war with the saints, and to overcome them…”  Revelation 13:7

The record goes on to describe harsh persecution – including captivity and execution – for true believers, really testing their faith and endurance.

THE OFFER OF LIFE OR DEATH

The Offer of Life or Death“Now what I am commanding you today is not too difficult for you or beyond your reach. For the Lord is your life…  Deuteronomy Chapter 30:12-20

For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; And they shall turn awaytheir ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.”    2 Timothy 4:3-4

Too much is at stake for you to not act yourself to seek out the TRUTH.

Christ himself has told us to do this when he said…

But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him. God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.”   John 4:23-24

SEEK THE TRUTH WITH WRESTED SCRIPTURES!

Use this True Bible Teaching Resource to help understanding some of the more difficult passages that many take in isolation to the rest of the Bible and claim that they teach things that the Bible does not teach.

The Bible is a large book, but it teaches us the truth from beginning to end, therefore anything towards the end of the Bible eg. The New Testament must agree with what is taught in the Old Testament, also remember that the divisions of the Bible into Old and New Testaments is a manmade one, the whole Bible is God's WORD to us and must be undersood consistently as such.
