COP26: UN chief says climate change goal on ‘life support’

COP26: Five takeaways as negotiators review draft climate deal

A draft climate deal gets mixed reviews while countries and companies make pledges to green the transport sector.

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres says the goal of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius is “on life support” as UN climate talks enter their final days, but he added that “until the last moment, hope should be maintained”.

In an exclusive interview Thursday (UK time) with The Associated Press, Guterres said the COP26 negotiations in Glasgow, Scotland, set to end Friday, will “very probably” not yield the carbon-cutting pledges he has said are needed to keep the planet from warming beyond the 1.5-degree threshold.

So far, the talks have not come close to achieving any of the UN’s three announced priorities for the annual conference, called COP26. One is cutting carbon emissions by about half by 2030 to reach the goal Guterres alluded to.

The other two are getting rich countries to fulfil a 12-year-old pledge of providing US$100 billion a year in financial climate aid to poor nations and ensuring that half of that amount goes to helping developing nations adapt to the worst effects of climate change.

China, U.S. will work together to meet COP26 goals

As the COP26 summit wraps up, the U.S. and China announced that they will work together to reduce emissions over the next 10 years.

Guterres said the Glasgow talks “are in a crucial moment” and need to accomplish more than securing a weak deal that participating nations agree to support.

“The worst thing would be to reach an agreement at all costs by a minimum common denominator that would not respond to the huge challenges we face,” Guterres said.

That’s because the overarching goal of limiting warming since pre-industrial times to 1.5 degrees Celsius by the end of the century “is still on reach but on life support”, Guterres said. The world has already warmed 1.1 degrees Celsius, leaving far less than a degree before the threshold is hit.

Just when we thought there might be an upside to Convid-19, we are told that there is only more bad NEWS for the World.  This world faces significant problems that are all life threatening to our current way of life.  But the Bible has long warned us of this situation we find ourselves in as it said that in the “last days” ie. before Christ’s coming in Luke 21:26 Christ said that:

26 Men’s hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth: for the powers of heaven shall be shaken.

But we do not subscribe to a doomsday view of the world, as God will allow. God has said that he will “destroy those who would destroy the earth” Rev 11:15-18. However what is very significant here is that the increase in man made problems are a sign of the nearness of Christ’s Return to this Earth. World problems are a clear sign of the nearness of Chirst’s return to this Earth to Establish God’s Kingdom as Promised as we read in Luke 21:27 Christ went on to say this:

“And then shall they see the Son of man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh.”

So rather than worry about these things True Bible Students REJOICE to see them knowing the Christ’s RETURN is drawing NEAR!
