Nations in Bible Prophecy

Nations in Bible Prophecy

The Bible has made many detailed, explicit predictions about various nations down the ages. The fact that these predictions have come true means that we can trust the Bible and build our lives upon it. Such prophecies are proof positive that the Bible is the Word of God - and that we can believe it!

Nations in Bible Prophecy

Prophecy about Assyria: "And he will stretch out his hand against the north, and destroy Assyria; and he will make Nineveh a desolation, a dry waste like the desert.  Herds shall lie down in it, every wild animal; the desert owl and the screech owl shall lodge on its capitals; the owl shall hoot at the window, the raven croak on the threshold; for its cedar work will be laid bare.  Is this the exultant city that lived secure, that said to itself, "I am, and there is no one else"? What a desolation it has become, a lair for wild animals! Everyone who passes by it hisses and shakes the fist" (Zephaniah 2:13-15).

Fulfilment: The Assyrian Empire fell in 612BC and was destroyed.  Even the ruins of its capital city - Nineveh - were buried for many generations, just as the Bible predicted.

Prophecy about Babylon:"And Babylon, the glory of kingdoms, the splendor and pride of the Chaldeans, will be like Sodom and Gomorrah when God overthrew them.  It will never be inhabited or lived in for all generations; Arabs will not pitch their tents there, shepherds will not make their flocks lie down there.  But wild animals will lie down there, and its houses will be full of howling creatures; there ostriches will live, and there goat-demons will dance.  Hyenas will cry in its towers, and jackals in the pleasant palaces; its time is close at hand, and its days will not be prolonged" (Isaiah 13:19-21).

Fulfilment:Babylon was so completely destroyed that it was believed by sceptics that it never existed - until the archaeologists excavated it. Despite Saddam Hussein's attempts to rebuild it, Babylon remains largely an uninhabited ruin.  But who knows, this might be one of those Bible prophecies with more than one fulfilment!

Prophecy about Ammon:"The word of the Lord came to me: Mortal, set your face toward the Ammonites and prophesy against them.  Say to the Ammonites, Hear the word of the Lord God: Thus says the Lord God, Because you said, "Aha!" over my sanctuary when it was profaned, and over the land of Israel when it was made desolate, and over the house of Judah when it went into exile; therefore I am handing you over to the people of the east for a possession.  They shall set their encampments among you and pitch their tents in your midst; they shall eat your fruit, and they shall drink your milk.  I will make Rabbah a pasture for camels and Ammon a fold for flocks.  Then you shall know that I am the Lord" (Ezekiel 25:1-5).

Fulfilment:Ammon was invaded and destroyed by the Nabateans in the first century BC.

Prophecy about Moab:"I have heard the taunts of Moab and the revilings of the Ammonites, how they have taunted my people and made boasts against their territory.  Therefore, as I live, says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, Moab shall become like Sodom and the Ammonites like Gomorrah, a land possessed by nettles and salt pits, and a waste forever.  The remnant of my people shall plunder them, and the survivors of my nation shall possess them.  This shall be their lot in return for their pride, because they scoffed and boasted against the people of the Lord of hosts" (Zephaniah 2:8-10).

Fulfilment:Moab has totally ceased to exist.

Prophecy about Egypt: "It shall be the most lowly of the kingdoms, and never again exalt itself above the nations; and I will make them so small that they will never again rule over the nations.  16 The Egyptians shall never again be the reliance of the house of Israel; they will recall their iniquity, when they turned to them for aid.  Then they shall know that I am the Lord God" (Ezekiel 29:15-16).

Fulfilment:The Egyptian Empire lost its power and te country declined.  Today Egypt is no longer a military super power, but an ordinary Middle Eastern nation.

Prophecy about Edom:The vision of Obadiah.  Thus says the Lord God concerning Edom... For the slaughter and violence done to your brother Jacob, shame shall cover you, and you shall be cut off forever.  On the day that you stood aside, on the day that strangers carried off his wealth, and foreigners entered his gates and cast lots for Jerusalem, you too were like one of them.  But you should not have gloated over your brother on the day of his misfortune; you should not have rejoiced over the people of Judah on the day of their ruin; you should not have boasted on the day of distress.  You should not have entered the gate of my people on the day of their calamity; you should not have joined in the gloating over Judah's disaster on the day of his calamity; you should not have looted his goods on the day of his calamity.  You should not have stood at the crossings to cut off his fugitives; you should not have handed over his survivors on the day of distress.  For the day of the Lord is near against all the nations.  As you have done, it shall be done to you; your deeds shall return on your own head" (Obadiah 1:1,10-15).

Fulfilment:By 500 BC Edom had ceased to exist as a nation, although some Edomites continued to live in Judea until AD 70.

Prophecy about Philistia:"I will cut off the inhabitants from Ashdod, and the one who holds the scepter from Ashkelon; I will turn my hand against Ekron, and the remnant of the Philistines shall perish, says the Lord God" (Amos 1:8).

Fulfilment:After 165 BC the Philistine cities had become Greek, and in 148 BC they were overrun by the Maccabees.  There is now no Philistine nation.

Prophecy about Israel:"But as for you, have no fear, my servant Jacob, says the Lord, and do not be dismayed, O Israel; for I am going to save you from far away, and your offspring from the land of their captivity. Jacob shall return and have quiet and ease, and no one shall make him afraid.  For I am with you, says the Lord, to save you; I will make an end of all the nations among which I scattered you, but of you I will not make an end. I will chastise you in just measure, and I will by no means leave you unpunished" (Jeremiah 30:10-11).

Fulfilment:The Jews have been scattered throughout the world for nearly 2000 years. Despite this, God promised that they would survive as a people and return to the land of Israel.  This happened in 1948 when the nation of Israel was once again established.

Prophecy about Phoenicia:"Tyre has built itself a rampart, and heaped up silver like dust, and gold like the dirt of the streets. But now, the Lord will strip it of its possessions and hurl its wealth into the sea, and it shall be devoured by fire" (Zechariah 9:3-4).

Fulfilment:Tyre was completely destroyed by Alexander the Great, and Sidon was destroyed by Artaxes III of Persia.  The Phoenicians no longer exist.

Each nation with which ancient Israel came into contact has Bible prophecies associated with it.  All of these prophecies were written well in advance of their fulfilment - often by several hundreds of years. Every single one of these prophecies has been fulfilled - or is being fulfilled.

The prophecies are so accurate in their fulfillment that it is highly unlikely that any one of them could have been fulfilled by mere coincidence.  The fulfilment of them all simply by chance is against all the odds of probability.

The only intellectually satisfying conclusion is that the Bible was able to predict such events because it is inspired by God, and it is a message to be trusted.
